Sheridan goal wins the points at Prescot
IAN SHERIDAN netted his 19th goal of the season to give Colwyn Bay three precious points at Prescot today (April 2).
And that was a big result on a day when two of their top five play-off rivals (Skelmersdale and Leigh Genesis) were beaten.
The Bay stay in third place and are now six points clear of Leigh from the same number of games and four clear of Skelmersdale, who have one game in hand.
Manager Neil Young said his side had to show their battling qualities on a poor surface and in a strong wind and rain, but added: "I can't praise the players enough. We knew it would be tough today and a lot of teams have come unstuck here, but the lads have stuck to the game plan and worked their socks off to get us a very important win.
"Gary and I have done a lot of soul searching over the last few weeks and we've come up with a different way of playing tactically, adapting more to various situations, and the players have carried that out perfectly today. I don't think Chris Sanna has had to make a save in the game which shows how well we have defended."
The only goal of the game came on 24 minutes when Anthony Sheehan won the ball on the right and crossed into the area where Sheridan clipped a first time shot over the keeper and just inside the far post.
Colwyn Bay were unlucky not to add a second two minutes into the second half when Danny Grannon, who had an excellent game at the back alongside Dave Challinor, headed into the net from a Glenn Rule free kick - only for the goal to ruled out for offside by a late flag from the linesman.
"Not in a million years was I offside; I ran from behind a defender to get my head on the ball," claimed Grannon afterwards.
Sheridan then put another chance wide and saw a cross hit the bar, while substitute Lee Davey headed a chance straight at the keeper, as Colwyn Bay bossed much of the second half with the wind behind them and with Rule and Sheehan putting in some sterling work in midfield.
Prescot came strongly at the end with substitute Tim Ojapha posing a threat down the left, but Colwyn Bay continued to defend so well that keeper Chris Sanna did not have to make a save. Prescot managed only three shots at goal which were all off target - although Tom Spearritt did have a shout for a penalty turned down when he went down in the area following a free kick.
Colwyn Bay should have got a second goal in injury time when Sheridan set up substitute Lee Davey with a perfect chance, only for him to shoot against the keeper's legs.
Colwyn Bay: Sanna, Denson, King, Grannon, Challinor, Sheehan, Sheridan, Rule, McGill (Davey 76mins), Stones, Graves. Subs not used: Rigoglioso, Kelly and Jackson.
Danny Grannon was my man of the match with a tremendous defensive display and unlucky not to have a goal.
He commented: "It was probably my best game for the club and hopefully I can get a run in the side now. Centre back is my favourite position, particulalry in these conditions, but I have also enjoyed playing left back and getting further up the field.
"It was very important to win today and now we need to keep things going on Monday."
Chris King also did well at left-back and Glenn Rule, playing a new role in midfield, and Anthony Sheehan were excellent in the middle alongside Greg Stones, who was also pushed forward, while Tom McGill, who finished the game with a nasty gash on his shin and a big lump on his forehead, and Sheridan worked their socks off up front.
Although Bay were down to the bare bones of the squad, Adriano Rigoglioso (who wasn't risked today) should be back for Monday and Tim Brandreth is also likely to be involved after recovering from a knee injury.
