Noon's double in fine victory at Marine
COLWYN BAY gave a top notch team performance to stretch their unbeaten away league record to six games with a thoroughly deserved 3-1 win at Marine.
It lifts the Seagulls up to eighth place in the table, just two points off the top five and within three of third-placed Northwich Victoria who travel to Llanelian Road this Saturday.
Two goals from Karl Noon against one of his former clubs helped secure the win, and that will be a welcome boost for him after eight games without a goal and having struggled a little in front of goal in recent games.
"I certainly needed that," he admitted afterwards."It was a huge relief to get back among the goals again and hopefully there is lot more to follow."
Player-boss Dave Challinor added: "We played slightly differently tonight to give Karl a bit more support and I think that helped him. He is a good finisher and he will score goals if we get the ball to him in decent areas."
But it was a really solid team performance. They were strong in defence when they had to be and in the first half particularly they tore Marine apart with their crisp attacking play.
The only way Marine could stop them was by commiting fouls (six of them in their own half in the first 25 minutes alone) and had five players booked with Dean Siadankay very lucky not to get a second.
McGraa, who was excellent in midfield again, could have had a first half hat-trick, but missed the target from three reasonable chances.
Bay's pressure, however, was finally rewarded on 31 minutes with a crisp right-foot finish by Noon from a Gareth Evans cross.
Evans came in for Lee Davey and had a good game, with Marine keeper Ryan McMahon beating away a strong shot from him to prevent a second goal.
The Bay could easily have been three or four up at that stage, yet Marine equalised right on the stroke of half-time with a diving header by Jamie Rainford after Kevin Leadbetter's fierce angled shot had hit the bar.
Marine started the second half very strongly and Chris Sanna had to make a good diving save from Rainford, while Leadbetter shot narrowly wide, as Colwyn Bay were forced to defend solidly to weather the storm in the opening 15 minutes or so.
There was then a lengthy delay after a clash of heads left Chris Sanna and Marine's newly-signed defender Dean Siadankay with nasty cuts and both needed their heads bandaged, but when the game restarted Colwyn Bay quickly went back in front.
Marine's Thomas Moore lost possession in midfield and substitute Anthony Sheehan, who had come on for Damien Allen (tight hamstring) at half-time, scored with a cracking shot from the edge of the penalty area on 66 minutes.
Evans went close with a good shot that McMahon touched over the bar before the Seagulls wrapped up the points with a third goal on 89 minutes after a superb run by Mick McGraa from the half-way line down the right.
He beat three defenders before cutting inside, and from his pass Jon Newby fed Karl Noon to rifle in his second goal of the game.
The 3-1 scoreline was a fair reflection of the game and Challinor was understandably delighted with the team's performance.
"I thought we were outstanding from first minute to last. We conceded a sloppy goal at the end of the first half and we knew they would come at us hard at the start of the second half, but as the game got stretched we knew there would be more space for us to attack them on the break.
"We passed the ball really well and were a massive threat to them up front.
"On another day we could have scored more goals, but I was glad we got the third one because that took the pressure off us and we were able to finish the game really comfortably."
Chally reports that Sanna may need a couple of stitches in his head wound, but should be fine for Saturday.
