Porthmadog game off

By Tim Channon on Nov 30, 10 03:31 PM

COLWYN BAY'S North Wales Coast FA Cup last 16 tie at home to Porthmadog, scheduled for Wednesday, December 1, has been postponed due to a frozen pitch under a layer of snow.

On Sunday, December 5, Colwyn Bay Football Club will welcome the local community to come together and sing carols at the ground in Llanelian Road.
Dilwyn Price will be conducting the Beulah Brass Band.
The gates will open round 1.30pm and the singing will take place from 2-3pm.
Admission is free and carol sheets will be available at the turnstiles.
Food, tea and coffee will be available tfor purchase from the bar.

THE club are also holding a children's Christmas party on Wednesday, December 22nd for young people aged 3 to 12.
There will be a magician, balloon modelling, face painting and traditional games, plus a hot meal of sausage and chips or chicken nuggetts and chips.
Club mascot Sydney the Seagull will also be present.
For more details see the club website on www.colwynbayfc.co.uk.

COLWYN BAY consolidated second place and moved to within three points of leaders Halifax with an important 3-1 victory over struggling Ossett Town.
But it was a below-par performance by the Seagulls and it needed a late goal from Fraser McLachlan five minutes from the end to clinch the points after their bottom five opponents had threatened to rescue a point with a battling second half display.
Colwyn Bay player-manager Dave Challinor agreed his side were well below their best.
"We were fortunate that we were up against one of the not so good sides, because we weren't at the races," he said.
"Even at half-time we said our 2-0 lead should not paper over the cracks, because we had been poor.
"Throughout the game we made wrong decisions, tried things we shouldn't and very nearly came unstuck.
"The players have to realise that whether we are playing the worst team in the league or the best team in the league you have to have good habits and do the right things. Whether it is in training, friendlies, league games or cup finals, you have to do the right things consistently - and we didn't today.
"The only positive thing you can say is that we got the three points which were massive and we've got a chance of another three next Saturday against another struggling side (Frickley Athletic) when hopefully we will have learnt from today."
Challinor, however, believes that the overall situation shows that progress is being made.
"As Colin (Woodthorpe) pointed out, we took 17 points from our first 10 league games and have now taken 19 from our second 10, so that is improvement and movement in the right direction. We must now look to build on that going into next Saturday's game," he said.
Colwyn Bay certainly struggled to capitalise after getting a great start with a penalty in the opening minute of the game.
With just 13 seconds on the clock, Karl Noon's attempted lay-off from a long early ball into the area was blocked by the arm of Ossett defender Caldon Henson - and with the referee havingf no hesitation in pointing to the spot, Jon Newby stepped up to fire the penalty past Ossett keeper Neil Bennett.
Noon could have added a second goal shortly afterwards but failed to connect with an attempted sidefoot shot from eight yards out (although he may well have got a nudge in the back from a defender), after Newby had run onto a great ball from McLachlan and set up the chance with a low cross.
Noon, however, made amends on 36 minutes when he volleyed an excellent second goal from a fine cross by Luke Denson.
But it was nearly 50 minutes before Bennett was tested again.
Colwyn Bay's play seemed etched with careless complacency as they gave the ball away far too casually, allowing Ossett to have plenty of possession.
They didn't really trouble Andy Metcalf in the first half, but the introduction of substitute Mark Bett early in the second half changed that.
He broke clear and chipped Metcalf to score with virtually his first touch after 58 minutes to pull it back to 2-1, and then he and Tom Penford shot narrowly wide with Metcalf beaten and Bett saw another dipping shot land on top of the net.
Colwyn Bay created virtually nothing in reply and the management team were forced to change things with Alex Titchiner and Ian Sheridan coming off the bench as the team switched to four at the back.
"Our system didn't really suit the way they played with just one up front, and I had toyed with changing it earlier," said Challinor.
"But in fairness we shouldn't have to change the way we play and which normally suits us, and if we had passed the ball properly and done the right things we would not have had to."
Even then, Colwyn Bay were forced to defend nervously as Ossett continued to press for an equaliser, and it looked like being a nail-biting finale - until man of the match winner McLachlan picked a perfect time to hit his first goal of the season with five minutes left.
Titchiner's attempt to breach Ossett's back line was blocked, but the ball rebounded to Fraser who struck a cracking left foot drive into the roof of the net beyond the leaping Bennett from 20 yards to secure the three points.
The wins puts Colwyn Bay five points clear of third-placed Buxton (although they now have three games in hand), and seven clear of sixth-placed Worksop (five games in hand).
All the main contenders for the play off spots have games in hand on the Bay (except Hucknall and Burscough), but I am sure they would all rather have the points in the bag at this stage than a mounting backlog of fixtures.
Colwyn Bay: Metcalf, Denson, Bailey, Challinor, Grannon, McMahon (Sheridan 63mins), McLachlan, Allen, Noon, Newby (Titchiner 63mins), Evans (McGraa 88mins). Subs not used: Davey and Sheehan.
Attendance: 233.

COLWYN BAY have received another knock-back in their efforts to bring in a striker on loan ahead to Saturday's home game against Ossett Town.
Player-boss Dave Challinor was confident he had reached agreement to bring in 28-year-old ex-Wrexham forward Steve Abbott from Telford - only for the player to change his mind at the last minute and opt to go to Division One North side Chorley instead.
That's the third time this season Challinor has reached agreement with a club, only for the player to decide to go somewhere else.
"I suppose we should be getting use to these knock-backs by now, but it is still very disappointing," said Challinor. "I thought everything was agreed, but perhaps it tells us something about the lad's character and we are better off not taking him.
"We will keep trying to improve our attacking options and in the meantime carry on with what we've got."
Joe McMahon and Gareth Evans, who both picked up hefty knocks in Tuesday's League Cup win at Kidsgrove, trained on Thursday night and should be fit to play against Ossett, while skipper Damien Allen returns from suspension, but there is a slight doubt over left-back Michael Lea with a hamstring problem.
"It is an injury that needs managing," reports Challinor. "We gave Mike a night off from training on Thursday and we'll leave a decision on him as late as possible."
Consecutive home games against bottom six sides Ossett (Nov 27) and Frickley Athletic (next Saturday) provide a big opportunity for Colwyn Bay to hold onto second place in the table, and Challinor agreed: "If we are to be realistic about what we want to achieve this season then these are two games we need to win.
"Hopefully in winning our previous two home games we have found a way of playing at home which we are comfortable with and we can continue that."
Bottom five side Ossett have lost nine of their last 10 league and cup games, conceding 32 goals in the process, and were beaten 4-1 by Stocksbridge Park Steels in the League Cup on Tuesday night.
Only rock bottom Retford have a worse defensive record in the Premier Division and only Retford and Frickley Athletic have scored fewer goals.
Ossett, however, did win 1-0 at Ashton United last Saturday to end a run of eight straight defeats and that is a warning that they cannot be taken lightly.
Colwyn Bay: (from) Metcalf, Denson, Lea, Challinor, Grannon, McMahon, Evans, McGraa, Noon, Allen, Newby, Bailey, Sheridan, Sheehan, Davey, Titchiner, O'Sullivan.

Titchiner on target in cup win

By Tim Channon on Nov 24, 10 01:28 AM

COLWYN BAY rode their luck to reach the last 16 of the League Challenge Cup with a 2-0 win at Division One South promotion candidates Kidsgrove Athletic (Nov 23).
Kidsgrove hit the post and missed at least four or five golden opportunities, mainly through their 21-goal striker Dave Walker, while Colwyn Bay, who rested several first choice players, capitalised on two defensive errors to win the tie.
Frustrated Kidsgrove boss Peter Ward said on another day Walker, who he said has been fantastic this season, could have scored six or seven! He couldn't believe some of the chances he missed.
Colwyn Bay rested half-a-dozen or so first choice players and player-boss Dave Challinor said the lack of experience in the side showed early on.
"We were under the cosh a bit early doors and certainly could have been at least one goal down, but once we got to grips with how they were playing I thought the lads were brilliant.
"We knew they (Kidsgrove) would put pressure on us with their two big lads up front, but for our lads who have not played very much and badly needed to get 90 minutes under their belts against quality opposition, it was very beneficial - and that was the main focus on the night.
"They will get another 90 minutes next week against Porthmadog and this win means they have given themselves another game in the League Cup - so I am very pleased. It means we can keep everybody in the squad involved in games over the next two or three weeks."
Alex Titchiner scored the opening goal on his return from a month's loan at Chester - and was delighted to get his first goal in what has been a difficult season for him so far.
"I probably needed that goal to be honest," he said afterwards. "But I feel I am a lot fitter now and hopefully will get another chance to show what I can do."
Challinor commented: "I thought Titch's attitude tonight was top class. He got knocked around a bit in the first half, but he kept going, worked his socks off, made a nuisance of himself and thoroughly deserved his goal.
"I think he has come back from his month away refreshed and more focused. He'll get another game next week against Porthmadog and it's up to him now to work hard in training, get himself involved in the squad again and, hopefully, recapture the form he showed when he was here on loan last season."
Titchiner's goal came after Kidsgrove had dominated the opening 30 minutes and should really have been in front.
Matt Haddrell headed weakly straight at Bay keeper Andy Metcalf from no more than four yards out when totally unchallenged, and he and Walker both missed the target with other chances, while Karl Charlton saw a goalbound shot deflected over the bar off Danny Grannon.
But Colwyn Bay gradually started to get a grip and took the lead on 31 minutes when a home defender's awful fresh air kick at an attempted clearance allowed Alex Titchiner to run in behind him and fire past keeper Steve Intihar.
Colwyn Bay had another amazing escape early in the second half when Walker's shot beat Metcalf, but hit the inside of the post and stayed out.
Walker twice badly missed the target when one-on-one with Metcalf, who saved well low to his left in another one-on-one with Walker, and then blocked a point blank range shot from Haddrell with his body after Walker had fluffed yet another chance to score.
But despite those Kidsgrove chances, Colwyn Bay forced nine corners to Kidsgrove's five and they got a second goal on 61 minutes when a hurried Kidsgrove clearance went straight to Joey O'Sullivan who scored from 20 yards - his well-struck shot squirming out of the keeper's hands and into the net.
O'Sullivan had another effort tipped over the bar by the keeper, while Ian Sheridan, who put in some great runs from deep during the game, was denied a deserved goal right at the end by a flying save from Intihar to turn his effort round the post for what was the save of the game.
Colwyn Bay: Metcalf, Sheehan, Bailey, Aspinall (Evans 70mins), Grannon, McMahon (Challinor 76mins), Sheridan, McGraa, Titchiner, Davey (Denson 45mins), O'Sullivan. Subs not used: Noon and Woodthorpe.
Attendance: 110.

Joe McMahon and Gareth Evans both picked up hefty knocks in the second half, but Challinor is hopefully both will be OK for Saturday, when he also hopes to have a new striker in on loan.
"The deal is virtually sealed, we are just trying to get agreement from his club to extend the loan period from four to six weeks so it will take in the three massive games against Ashton, Halifax and Kendal over the New Year period," reported Challinor.
"If it goes through he will increase competition for places and give us extra dimension up front."
Challinor is also urgently chasing goalkeeper cover as Andy Metcalf is unavailable for the home game against Frickley Athletic on December 4 due to exams.
The Seagulls management had hoped to bring in Dan Roberts from Staffordshire club Stone for the game at Kidsgrove to have a look at him, but his club have demanded seven days notice - and that also rules him out of next week's game against Porthmadog in the North Wales Coast Cup.
"It doesn't give us much chance to have a proper look at him before the Frickley game and we may have to try and bring a keeper in on loan for that game instead," added Challinor.
"We are looking hard for a permanent signing because we obviously need cover in case Andy gets injured or is tied up with exams."
Meanwhile, off the field, congratulations are due to assistant manager Colin Woodthorpe who has this week passed his UEFA B coaching licence exam.

Titchiner back for cup game

By Tim Channon on Nov 22, 10 12:14 PM

COLWYN BAY will use Tuesday's League Challenge Cup third round tie at Kidsgrove Athletic as a chance to give squad players a full game.
Alex Titchiner, who has returned from a month's loan at Chester, is set to play and Anthony Sheehan, Ian Sheridan, Lee Davey, Sam Bailey and Joe O'Sullivan, who were all on the bench at Matlock last weekend, will probably start.
"It is a game we would obviously like to win, but our priority has to be the league and doing everything we can to help us get three points against Ossett on Saturday," said player-boss Dave Challinor.
Club captain Damien Allen, who missed last Saturday's game through suspension, will be kept back for Saturday and fullback Michael Lea, who has a slight hamstring strain, will also be among those rested along with possibly Jon Newby (bruised hip).
It could be a tough game for the Bay as Kidsgrove are looking strong promotion candidates in Division One South, currently lying sixth in the table but with games in hand on all but one of the teams above them, and they go into Tuesday's game on the back of three successive victories.
Colwyn Bay: (from) Metcalf, Denson, Bailey, McMahon, Challinor, Grannon, Evans, McGraa, Noon, Sheridan, Sheehan, Davey, O'Sullivan, Newby, McLachlan, Aspinall, Woodthorpe.

Away record ended at Matlock

By Tim Channon on Nov 20, 10 09:10 PM

COLWYN BAY stayed second in the table, but lost their proud unbeaten away league record with a 3-0 loss at Matlock (Nov 20).
The scoreline was a little harsh, but the Bay were not at their best. They badly missed the suspended and in-form Damien Allen in midfield and created very little in the way of genuine chances against a Matlock side who defended very well and were clearly determined to end their recent run of three consecutive home defeats.
As player-boss Dave Challinor pointed out afterwards, if a Gareth Evans header early in the game had gone in rather than hit a post, or if the Bay had been given a penalty at 1-0 when Jon Newby was flattened inside the area by a charge in the back as he was going up for a header, it might have been different.
"It was never a 3-0 game, but it can be such a fine margin and we didn't get a break or a big decision in our favour all afternoon," said Challinor.
"Newbs (Newby) was a nailed on penalty for me and could have put us level at 1-1. It is a different game then, but Instead we had to start chasing the game in the last 20 minutes against a side who defended very well, and got caught twice on the break."
Colwyn Bay, in fact, started quite well with Evans very unlucky when his header over the keeper hit the post and was scrambled clear, then home keeper Adam Sollitt made a fine save to push a Karl Noon shot round the post after Newby had laid the ball off from Luke Denson's good pass.
Andy Metcalf had to be on his toes to push a shot from Liam King round the post and then did even better to tip a close range header from Nathan Joynes over the bar.
But Colwyn Bay seemed to switch off from a Matlock free kick on 18 minutes when it was played out wide to fullback Lee Featherstone on the left, and his low cross was swept past Metcalf by the unmarked Ross Hannah.
"The lad Hannah is a tremendous finisher who is well capable of scoring 40 goals a season," said Challinor. "He only needs a half-chance and we warned Joe (McMahon) and Danny (Grannon) before hand that if he wasn't picked up in the area he would score - so their first goal was very disappointing in that respect."
It was a crucial goal as well because Matlock grew in confidence after that and the Bay found it increasingly difficult to find a way through them.
Evans shot narrowly over the bar from 25 yards just before half-time, but that was the closest they came to testing the keeper.
Metcalf stood up well to block a shot from Hannah in a one-on-one, but as the Bay became more and more stretched, Hannah broke clear again and was tripped from behind by Challinor inside the area before picking himself up and scoring from the penalty spot on 71 minutes.
Possibly a more experienced keeper than Metcalf might have raced off his line and tried to win the ball at Hannah's feet as the striker did not have it fully under control. But the 18-year-old stayed back and Hannah was able to catch the ball up before being tripped.
Challinor admitted he was lucky to only get a yellow card for that because he was the last defender.
Colwyn Bay switched to a 4-3-3 formation and then pushed Grannon up front in one final throw of the dice in the closing minutes, but that left them short at the back and Matlock substitute Dene Cropper capitalised by adding the third goal four minutes into added time.
Challinor said afterwards he was disappointed with the result more than he was by the team's performance.
"One or two of us weren't on top of our game today, but on another day with a couple of breaks going our way we would have got something out of the game.
"Our next two league games now are both at home so it is important we regroup and prepare ourselves properly for those."
With Buxton held to a 1-1 draw, Colwyn Bay stay in second place, but the league remains very tight. With the third, fourth and fifth clubs all within three points of Colwyn Bay with two games in hand, the Seagulls will want to make the most of those next two games at home to bottom six sides Ossett Town and Frickley Athletic.
Colwyn Bay: Metcalf, Denson, Lea (Bailey 89mins), Challinor, McMahon (Sheridan 74mins), Evans, McGraa, Noon, Newby, McLachlan. Subs not used: Sheehan, Davey, O'Sullivan

Skipper misses Matlock game

By Tim Channon on Nov 19, 10 12:41 PM

COLWYN BAY player-boss Dave Challinor will make a late decision on who replaces in-form skipper Damien Allen for Saturday's trip to potential top five rivals Matlock Town (Nov 20).
The former Stockport County and Royal Antwerp midfielder is ruled out by a one-game ban after accumulating five bookings - and it comes at a time when he has been on top of his game and a key figure in Bay's recent four-match unbeaten run.
Fraser McLachlan or Danny Grannon will take over the captain's armband - with McLachlan having done the job when Allen missed games against Chasetown and Guiseley in September.
"We are getting a report on Matlock from their game against Halifax in midweek and will study that and wait until we've seen the condition of the pitch before we decide on our shape and line up," said Challinor.
Gareth Evans suffered a fractured nose in Tuesday's win over FC United, but trained on Thursday and is expected to be involved at Matlock.
The Seagulls are very keen to retain second place in the table with a result that would extend their unbeaten away league record into double figures.
"That would be quite an achievement," agrees Challinor. "Everyone is well aware of the record (five wins and four draws in nine games) and we really want to continue that if we can.
"But it will be a difficult game. Matlock have a number of games in hand over us and I expect them to be up there challenging at the end of the season."
Matlock go into the game on the back of three consecutive home defeats and their results have been better away than at home, but they still have the second-best defensive record in the division - bettered only by leaders Halifax.
Their main goal threat comes from 23-year-old striker Ross Hannah who won the Premier Division's Golden Boot award last year and has already hit 20 goals this season - seven of them in a 10-0 FA Trophy win against Bedworth.
Colwyn Bay haven't played at Matlock since losing there 2-0 in the Presidents Cup in 2006. The last league meeting between the two sides at Causeway Lane was in January 2004 when the result was a 1-1 draw.
Colwyn Bay (from): Metcalf, Denson, Lea, Challinor, Grannon, McMahon, McLachlan, Noon, Newby, Evans, McGraa, Sheridan, Sheehan, Davey, Bailey, O'Sullivan.

COLWYN BAY came from behind with three second half goals to beat FC United of Manchester 3-1 to bag another three big points.
FC United's big following swelled the gate to 1,003 (Bay's biggest league game of the season by some way), but it was the home fans who were cheering at the end as Colwyn Bay moved into second place in the table on their own following Northwich Victoria's 3-1 defeat at Marine.
FC United got a great start and were ahead inside the first 10 minutes when Mike Norton headed firmly past Andy Metcalf from Jerome Wright's strong run and cross from the left.
But Colwyn Bay were the better side after that, with only poor finishing preventing them being on level terms by half-time.
Dave Challinor was inches too high with a header from a corner, while Karl Noon and Gareth Evans both shot wide on the turn from good positions, and Noon then put in a strong run through the middle to open up the best chance of the half only to shoot wide.
Damien Allen did get the ball in the net when Challinor headed on a free kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Three goals in the opening 28 minutes of the second half, however, turned the game around.
FC United were twice undone by long balls over the top as first Jon Newby raced clear to shoot past the advancing Sam Ashton on 61 minutes, and later Karl Noon ran on to round the keeper and score the third. In between, Damien Allen's first time shot from 18 yards had also found the net after the visitors failed to clear a cross from the right.
Noon should then have added a fourth but headed a great chance against a post from Allen's cross as Bay ran out comfortable winners.
Player-boss Dave Challinor said: "Obviously we knew how important the three games this week were going to be and we're delighted to have got six points out of six with two fantastic performances - and hopefully we can make it nine on Saturday.
"Apart from the first 10 minutes I thought we were fantastic again tonight. We knew if Luke (Denson) and Mike (Lea) could control their wingers then that is a massive part of their game gone, and that worked well. We played at a terrific tempo and squeezed the ball and when you do that in this league not many teams can play against it.
" We now face another difficult away game at Matlock on Saturday, but we are very aware of our unbeaten away record and we really want to continue that.
"We are without Damo (Allen) through suspension so somebody else will need to come in and do a job, but we go there with a lot of confidence.
"I like to think I've got a good group of players who enjoy themselves, enjoy coming here and playing, and hopefully now after these two big results this week they are starting to believe in themselves, in the ability they've got and what they can achieve."
Unfortunately Gareth Evans, who had to come off early in the second half, has a suspected broken nose after a collision with the keeper.
Jon Newby, who has been playing with a badly bruised hip in the last couple of games, overcame the handicap to score another crucial goal while Damien Allen, who has been immense in the last few games, was again my man of the match.
Colwyn Bay: Metcalf, Denson, Lea, Challinor, Grannon, McMahon, McLachlan (McGraa 87mins), Allen, Noon, Newby (Davey 82mins), Evans (Sheridan 49mins). Subs not used: Sheehan and Bailey.
Attendance: 1,003.

COLWYN BAY will bid to enhance their top four status with a second home win in four days when they take on FC United at Llanelian Road on Tuesday (7.45pm).
Victory could even lift Colwyn Bay into second place on their own if Northwich fail to win at Marine, but player-boss Dave Challinor is not underestimating the task his side face.
And he will again be looking for the same high level of performance and workrate that the players showed in last Saturday's win against second-placed Buxton.
FC United, who are just one tie away from going into the hat with the Premiership big guns for the third round draw of the FA Cup, have just had an impressive seven-match winning run, including an FA Cup success at Rochdale, ended by last Saturday's 1-0 league defeat at Northwich Victoria.
They will be keen to bounce back from that, but they were somewhat fortunate to beat Colwyn Bay at Gigg Lane in the FA Trophy recently and Seagulls fans will be hoping their side can avenge that result.
Colwyn Bay will need a late check on midfielder Mick McGraa who aggravated an ankle injury last Saturday, but the player-boss expects to have everyone available and says
players on the bench will again play a key role later in the game.
FC United are still without first choice keeper Zach Hibbert (broken nose), but are expected to include most of the players who won at Rochdale, including Jake Cottrell, who is one of five players shortlisted for the E.oN FA Cup Player of the Round award which is due to be announced next Monday.
Colwyn Bay (from): Metcalf, Denson, Lea, Challinor, Grannon, McMahon, McLachlan, Allen, Noon, Newby, McGraa, Evans, Sheridan, Davey, Sheehan, Bailey.

JON NEWBY fired home an 80th minute penalty to take his season's goals tally into double figures and lift Colwyn Bay back into the top four of the Premier Division.
It put the Seagulls level on points with second-placed Buxton and third-placed Northwich Victoria and a point ahead of Worksop and Hucknall Town as the battle for the play-off places remains as tight as ever.
Joe McMahon was recalled to the side and had an excellent game as the Seagulls reverted to a 3-5-2 formation - and again it proved successful.
On the day it wasn't to be Buxton's cup of tea, and apart from four free kicks which were all well off trarget, they managed only three other attempts at goal in the game - against 11 by Colwyn Bay.
Dave Challinor said : "It was a massive win for us and I was delighted with the performance and particularly our workrate, and hopefully we can take that into Tuesday's game against FC United.
"Today was the start of three huge games which we feel will go a long way to deciding whether or not we are going be up there or there abouts at Christmas.
"To get three points today is great way to start."
And he agreed playing three at the back again worked well.
"Obviously our home form, in comparison to our away form, has been disappointing and we just thought that, with the way Buxton play, it was the way to go today.
"If we can put pressure on teams and force them to play long then myself, Danny (Grannon) and Joe can clean things up at the back all day.
"Having Joe in the side also gives us extra height and an added threat at set pieces."
Danny Grannon, who got the first goal for his fifth of the season, also believes the formation helps him.
"The big lads in the opposition tend to go and mark Joe and that leaves me with a better chance to get my head on things against smaller guys," he says.
"To have got five goals already this season is fantastic and beyond my expectations. It would be brilliant if I could carry on and finish in double figures."
In a goalless first half, Buxton could have scored in the first two minutes, but Andy Metcalf did well to save with an outstretched leg from top scorer Kieran Lugsden, but Colwyn Bay had the better chances after that with Buxton keeper Scott Hartley saving from Mick McGraa and Luke Denson, while McGraa got in a shot that dipped just over the bar and McMahon was inches wide with a header from Damien Allen's cross.
Colwyn Bay took the lead 12 minutes into the second half after Buxton failed to clear the ball from a corner. Karl Noon got past a defender and when his cross was headed goalwards by Grannon, Hartley got his hands to the ball but couldn't prevent it trickling over the line.
The lead lasted only four minutes, however, as Buxton equalised with a diving header by Mark Reed.
The Seagulls had two big shouts for penalties for fouls on Fraser McLachlan and Grannon waved away before McLachlan fired a great chance into the sidenetting, but they couldn't be refused the stonewall 80th minute spot kick which won the game.
Substitute Gareth Evans was chopped down by Buxton skipper Gregg Anderson after a strong run took him into the area, and Newby smashed home the penalty to win three very valuable points.
"I was delighted with every one of the lads today, but over these very important next few games everybody in the squad is going to play a big part," added Challinor. "That showed today when Gaz (Evans) came on. I thought he was different class. He gives us something different and when the game gets stretched late on he has the ability to get forward and cause problems like he did to get the penalty."
That could yet prove to be a very important moment in Bay's season.
Colwyn Bay: Metcalf, Denson, Lea, Challinor, Grannon, McMahon, McLachlan, Allen, Noon, Newby (Sheridan 84mins), McGraa (Evans 69mins), Subs not used: Davey, Sheehan, Bailey.
Attendance: 376.
Man of match award: Damien Allen.

The management team of Dave Challinor and Colin Woodthorpe showed their commitment to the local community in the morning of the game by agreeing to officially open the new Flex-Tech Gym in Penrhyn Road, Colwyn Bay.
