McDonald joins Nantwich
COLWYN BAY have suffered a blow ahead of Saturday's home game against Droylsden with central defender Rod McDonald moving to Evostik League side Nantwich Town.
Although McDonald has struggled to get into the side recently, he had an outstanding game in the FA Trophy win at Halifax on Tuesday night and had every chance of keeping his place in the team against Droylsden.
"That makes his decision all the more disappointing, but he has a very good relationship with Nantwich manager Jimmy Quinn and believes he will have a better chance of regular football there," reported Seagulls player-boss Jon Newby.
"We wish him well and will now look to try and bring in a replacement over the next couple of weeks."
That becomes more urgent as skipper Danny Meadowcroft will be suspended for the FA Trophy tie against Lincoln City on December 10 after picking up his fifth booking of the season last weekend.
Fortunately Colwyn Bay will now have Matty Hughes available for another month after Fleetwood Town this week agreed to further extend the 20-year-old's loan period until January 7th.
Hughes had been due to return to Fleetwood after the Droylsden game.
Newby expects to have midfielder Gareth Evans available again after he missed Tuesday's game with a tight groin, but fullback Luke Denson has been struggling with a chest infection all week and will need a late check to see if he is well enough to play.
Seventh-played Droyslden are three points and six places above Colwyn Bay in the table, having played a game more, so a victory for the Seagulls would be a big boost in their bid to climb back into the top 10 - especially with close rivals Worcester and Boston facing tough games against main title contenders Hyde United and Stalybridge on Saturday, while Halifax and Altrincham play each other.
Droylsden have lost three of their last five away games in the league, including a 5-2 defeat at Corby a couple of weeks ago, but they do pose a threat up front in Danny Rowe, who has just won the Blue Square Bet North Player of the Month award for November.
The striker, who is on six months loan from Fleetwood, scored seven goals during the month and also contributed a number of assists.
Newby commented: "We were very unlucky not to get anything at their place when we played very well, but we are expecting another tough game. They pass the ball around well and are a good side going forward, with other players just as dangerous as Danny Rowe, so we have to find a way to deal with that."
