COLWYN BAY manager Steve Pope has apologised to fans and admitted he got his team selection wrong in last Saturday's FA Cup defeat at Bamber Bridge.
Colwyn Bay were 2-0 down at half-time after Steve Aspinall started the game out of position in the back four, and although they got back to 3-3 in the second half, they lost to a goal in the last 10 minutes.
"I hold my hands up. I got it wrong and should not have played Steve Aspinall in the back four," said the manager this week.
"We had played a similar formation at Durham and kept a clean sheet after losing our keeper, but it just didn't work on Saturday.
"We changed it at half-time and should have got at least a replay out of it, but we were punished for individual errors and some of the players need to hold their hands up to the mistakes they made as well as me."
The team, should be keen to make amends when they play Bamber Bridge in the league at Llanelian Road this Saturday.
Tim Brandreth, who had to go off for a treatment to a cut head last Saturday, did not need stitches and should be fit for Saturday, but the manager reports that Rob Hopley (knee) and Dean Canning (calf) are both struggling with injuries and will need late fitness tests.
See the Weekly News this Thursday for news of a major new signing..
COLWYN BAY failed to capitalise on their second half chances after wrestling the initiative away from Woodley Sports on banj holiday Monday, and had to settle for a 1-1 scoreline in a second drawn game over the bank holiday weekend.
The Stockport side were much sharper in midfield in the first half and took the lead on 40 minutes when they broke free down on the right, and Gavin Salmon scored with a crisp finish after Danny Queeley had his shot blocked.
Colwyn Bay missed the industry and guile up front of Dean Canning, whose wife went into labour overnight, and from the only openings they created Matty Wood and Andy Moran finished poorly and Rob Hopley volleyed narrowly over the bar.
Colwyn Bay were better in the second half and were level after 53 minutes when Scott Lycett put in a strong run on the left and cut in along the by-line before pulling the ball back for Hopley to fire past Woodley keeper Ben Connett.
The Seagulls should have gone go on to win from there as Woodley hardly created a threat, but Andy Moran had a header cleared off the line, Tim Brandreth volleyed over the bar from six yards from a Steve Aspinall free kick, Aspinall had a shot tipped over the bar by Connett and Moran was put clear by Aspinall's pass only for Connett to save at his near post.
Woodley Sports conceded a flurry of free kicks around the edge of their area and had defender Clive Brown sent off for two yellow cards for fouls as the game went into added time, but Colwyn Bay couldn't make anything of the opportunities.
And in the end it needed an excellent point blank save by Matt Parry in the closing seconds to prevent Salmon stealing the points for the visitors.
Colwyn Bay remain unbeaten after three games, but assistant manager Paul Ogden was unhappy with the performance.
"We struggled to cope with their diamond formation in the first half and changed things at half-time, but after getting the goal back we didn't take the game on as we should have done.
" Playing a second game in three days, with a number of the players suffering from blisters after playing on Durham's artificial pitch last Saturday, clearly didn't help us, but we shouldn't use that as an excuse. The game was there to be won today and we didn't play well enough to take the opportunity, which was disappointing."
Colwyn Bay: Parry, Roberts, Lycett. Coverley, Brandreth, Aspinall, Frost (Hughes 74mins), Williams, Hopley, Moran (MacIntosh 77mins), Wood (Brown 50mins). Subs not used: O'Mahoney, Colulo.Attendance: 357.
LLANDUDNO drew 1-1 at home to Flint Town United and had Joe Morgan red carded near the end as their disappointing start to the new season continued on Tuesday night.
After a goalless first half they took the lead through Jason Sadler from a Gwyn Peters cross on 58 minutes, but Flint equalised through Ian Parry from a corner six minutes later.
Both sides had chances to win it after that, with Lee Thomas missing the best of them when he was clean through on goal, but put his chip over the advancing keeper wide of the target.
A flare-up between the two sets of players near the end saw Morgan red carded and three other players booked.
LLANDUDNO suffered another blow to their title challenge in the North Wales Cricket League's Premier Division when they were put to the sword by Pontblyddyn's Charles Fernando.
He took 4 fior 38 with the ball as Llandudno. without overseas players Romain Grenville, were bowled out for 147, of which skipper Aled Williams hit 41. Fernando then scored 94 not out with the bat to steer his side to an emphatic seven-wicket win at 150 for 3.
That leaves Llandudno nine points behind leaders Menai Bridge who had their game washed out by the weather.
MOCHDRE are only two points further behind after continuing their good run of form with victory over Connah's Quay.
After restricting their opponents to 83 for 8, with Gareth Davies taking 3 for 19 off 12 overs, Mochdre won on 86 for three with Laurance Watson on 36 not out, to go level on points with Brymbo.
LLANRWST had their game at Bethesda washed out by the weather as was CONWY'S game at Carmel and COLWYN BAY'S match at Lytham in the Liverpool Competition.
ADAM CAMPION carried his bat to score 96 not out as Mochdre moved into the top four of the North Wales Cricket League with a comprehensive 174-run win at Mold on Saturday (August 2).
His anchor role helped Mochdre score 247 for 9 declared and they then dismissed Mold for 73 with Gareth Goodson taking 4 for 23 and Russ Boswell 3 for 16.
An unbeaten half century by skipper Aled Williams helped LLANDUDNO beat Hawarden Park by three wickets to stay second in the table, five points behind leaders Menai Bridge.
Llandudno won on 182 for 7 after bowling Hawarden Park out for 181 with Sam Rimmington 3 for 20 and Duncan Midgley, Jonathan Gallagher and Graham Boase claiming two wickets each.
LLANRWST remain in the relegation danger zone after a 63-run defeat against Pontblyddyn after being bowled out for just 80 chasing Pontblyddyn's total of 143 for 9.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS scored a second half equaliser to give Colwyn Bay a 1-1 draw against Cefn Druids at Llanelian Road.
The Welsh Premier side started the stronger and Nicky Ward capitalised on a misunderstanding between Neil Coverley and keeper Matt Parry to give them a 17th minute lead.
Colwyn Bay gradually settled into their game and Dean Canning had a shot cleared off the line before half-time. then after dominating much of the play in the second half, they deservedly equalised when Robbie Williams scored withg a well taken goal from 20 yards out.
Substitute keeper Farai Jackson saved well at the feet of Ward to keep the sides on level terms and Rob Hopley missed a great chance to win it for the Bay in the last 10 minutes when he miskicked in front of goal from a Dave Hughes cross.
AUSTRALIA retained the Deaf Ashes when the second cricket Test against England at Colwyn Bay ended in a draw.
