It's not all glitz and glamour

CONTRARY to popular belief a journalist's life doesn't contain a lot of glitz and glamour. Mostly, at this time of the year, commonly known as "the silly season" in journalese, because of the dearth of news, it's a case of trawling our contacts books in the search for stories to fill the pages of the Weekly News.

But occasionally, there comes an opportunity for a little light relief, and this arrived on my desk a couple of week's ago in the form of an invitation to attend a gala evening to launch Llandudno's newly extended theatre and conference centre Venue Cymru.
Together with some civic big wigs, other pillars of the community, the theatre's sponsors and caterers, on Tuesday eveninI enjoyed a buffet meal, in the conference centre foyer, before settling into a seat in the theatre to see the legendary actor Ron Moody as Scrooge in a new adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol.
Anyone who remembers Moody for his brilliant portrayal of Fagin in the film version of Lionel Bart's musical Oliver, would like me, have thought we were in for a rare treat, but sad to say, expectation didn't quite match up to reality.
I'll leave a detailed review of the production to our theatre correspondent Frank Sheehan, but suffice to say that despite Mr Moody's undoubted acting skills, in my opinion this wasn't a production to remember.
Neverthless it was an enjoyable evening, among impressive surroundings. The new conference facilities should help to secure a prosperous future for Llandudno, as already events estimated to generate £15m for the local economy are booked in, so that's one good news story we have been able to report so far this.
