I found it thoroughly touching to hear that Sean Laxen's family decided to donate money to the North Wales rescue team who helped search for the missing nine-year-old schoolboy after he disappeared while on holiday in the region.

It was back in August when the youngster from Norfolk tragically fell into the fast-flowing River Conwy near Conwy Falls in Betws-y-Coed and emergency services joined forces with mountain rescue teams in a frantic underwater search which ended in tragedy.

The family requested at Sean's funeral that instead of giving flowers people could donate money, and this resulted in a cheque for £2,000 which Sean's dad and aunts presented to members of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team when the family made an emotional visit back to the region at the weekend.

Even in their darkest hour Sean's family were thinking of the people who had helped them. Ogwen Valley's volunteers really are proving to be the unsung heroes of North Wales, performing up to 60 mountain rescues a year and assisting in more and more police searches such as the underwater operation at Conwy Falls.

So it is really fitting to see the team have been nominated by the public for the chance of winning an award at this Friday's Weekly News/ ScottishPower Your Champions Awards. The ceremony, held at St George's Hotel in Llandudno, is an evening of recognition where everyday folk who have made outstanding contributions to the region's communities are recognised and rewarded for their selfless actions.

Good luck to the volunteers of Ogwen who are on call 365 days a year, whatever the weather, and to everyone who has been nominated for an award on Friday evening! Read all about it in next week's Weekly News.
